Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride (PCBN) is a material that has application in machining ferrous materials such as hardened steel components over the range 45 to 70HRC and grey cast irons. The material combines high hot hardness, chemical stability and abrasion resistance to provide an effective solution for machining these very different workpiece materials.
PCBN is made by binding cubic boron nitride in a ceramic phase. HH synthesises cubic boron nitride from a starting material of hexagonal boron nitride using the same principle as that of the high pressure, high temperature process used to manufacture its synthetic diamond products. Once formed, the cubic boron nitride particles are selected and characterised before a second synthesis process is carried out in the presence of a ceramic binder.
By varying the particle/ binder ratios, different grades of PCBN have been developed that are tailored for different machining operations and various workpiece material types.
Five products are currently available within the PCBN metalworking.
Product Range
HCN450 Designed for moderately interrupted hard turning and finish hard milling, this grade has also proven competitive in high-speed continous turning, both for wet and dry conditions where its resistance to crater wear is among the highest in the market. The material has approximately 45% CBN, a sub-µ M CBN grain size and a TiCN binder. Having one of the finest structures of all commercial grades, it can also provide for sub-µ M surface roughness (Rz)
HHC500 The proprietary manufacturing methods employed for HHC500 provide an extremely uniform structure which gives it a resistance to chipping. DCC500 is recommended for application areas where tool life or high cutting speeds are desirable.
HCX650 The most recent addition to the 'low-CBN'. HCX650 is recommended for moderate to heavy interrupted turning of all common hardended steels. A proprietary multi-modal grain size distribution is used to provide the optimum balance of toughness and surface-finish capabilities. A TiCN binder system is employed to provide good restance to crater and flank wear. The CBN content is approximately 65%
HH85 is one of the most versatile and successful high CBN grades in the market. The material's success in a diverse range of applications such grey as iron fine boring and valve seat machining can be attributed to excellent strength and abrasion resistance. Also, its extreme chip resistance makes HH85 ideal for heavily interrupted cutting of all hard materials. HH85 contains 85% CBN with a 1-2 µ M grain size and an A|WCoB binder.
HH90 As the first high-CBN solid grade in the market, HH90 continues to be used extensively for turning and milling grey and hard cast irons. The grade is also used for heavy turning of hardened steels, e. G., rough-turning or steel rolls. For certain applications, the solid format provides a more economical tooling solution (with useable edges on both faces of the insert). HH90 contains 90% CBN with a 10 µ M grain size. The binder phase comprises aluminium nitrades and borides.
